Sell Your Area Rug in Victoria
A good rug holds its value, but selling one privately is hard: buyers want to know what it’s made of, and whether it’s clean. We answer both before it goes on sale, take care of about 95% of the hassle, and pay you most of, or more than, what you’d get selling it yourself.
What we take
Hand-knotted, wool and synthetic rugs, as long as the rug has enough resale value. Sizes from 4×6 to 8×10 sell fastest; very large and very small rugs take longer. Runners and small rugs are worth a quote when they’re quality pieces. Brands we often see include Nanimarquina, East India Carpets, GAN, Golran, CC Tapis, Limited Edition, GT Design, Woodnotes, Kinnasand, Jaipur Living, Loloi, Nourison, Surya, Chandra, Article and Restoration Hardware.
These are examples, not a complete list. See every brand we accept, or just send us photos.
We don’t take rugs with heavy fringe damage, pet odours, or stains that are unlikely to come out with professional cleaning.
Professional cleaning, handled for you
Any rug with visible soiling, or from a home with pets, is professionally cleaned before we list it. Coming from a pet-friendly home doesn’t rule a rug out; it just needs that cleaning first.
The cleaning cost goes on your consignment account. It’s only charged if the rug sells, when it comes out of your payout, or if you take the rug back. If the rug ends up being donated, we absorb the cost.
Some stains don’t come out, even with professional cleaning. If that happens, the rug isn’t sellable.
How we check what it’s made of
We check each rug’s fibre and construction against the original purchase information you give us. We generally ask for the original receipt. For wool and silk rugs, we can often work without one.
How it works
- Send photos of the front, the back and any wear through our quote form, plus the receipt if you have it. We’ll reply with a price range.
- Movers pick it up, usually with about 5 business days’ notice. We pay the pickup cost upfront and deduct it from your payout.
- We inspect it, arrange cleaning if needed, photograph it and give it a multi-point condition score.
- We price it from its brand, age, original retail price, condition and the current market. Most pieces sell for 30–80% off retail.
- You track it in your consignor portal and get paid on the next 15th or 30th after it sells.
On consignment you receive 50% of the net sale for rugs over $500, and 40% under $500. Over 90% of our pieces sell within 3 months.
Prefer to be paid on pickup day? Ask about an upfront purchase.

“Elwin and the team collected, cleaned, and marketed it, and it wasn’t long before we received our payout. Thank you Recertified Furniture!”

Frequently asked questions
Do you take rugs with stains, fringe damage or pet odour? Not with heavy fringe damage, pet odours, or stains unlikely to come out with professional cleaning. Rugs from homes with pets are fine once professionally cleaned.
I don’t have the receipt. Can I still sell it? For wool and silk rugs, often yes. Send photos and we’ll let you know.
Who pays for cleaning? It goes on your account and is only charged if the rug sells or you take it back. If it’s donated, we cover it.
What if it doesn’t sell? After 5 months, you can pick it up, we can donate it at no cost to you, or we can keep it for sale at an adjusted price.
