Grinding wheels have been used for thousands of years to grind pigments and grains. One of the earliest known examples of a grinding wheel comes from Java, an island in Indonesia in which they were made either from stone or a durable wood like teak. The stone or wood fragment was carved into a circular shape and a hole was drilled in the center to allow for mounting on a spindle.
